How to Read a Player Efficiency Index
An efficiency index blends a value stat, something in the family of Wins Above Replacement, with a percentile ranking against the rest of the league, the same idea behind the percentile sliders you see on Statcast pages. A player graded "Elite" is performing near the top of the league at his role; "High" and "Above Average" describe real, rosterable production a tier or two down. The number itself matters less than the direction it moves over a season, and single-game spikes should be weighed lightly against a larger sample.
What a Prospect Ranking Actually Tells You
A Top 30 list is a snapshot of projection, not certainty. Rankings weigh present performance against scouted tools, hit, power, speed, field, and arm, and an ETA (estimated time of arrival) is a target, not a promise; injuries, statistical dips, and simple development pace move it constantly. For a franchise mid-transition to Las Vegas, the system list is also a preview of who the fan base will be building around once the new ballpark opens.
Reading a Payroll Tracker
"Active payroll" is what a club owes players currently on the roster; "retained salary" is money still being paid out on a player who was traded away; projected arbitration figures estimate what pre-free-agency players will earn through the arbitration process before a number is finalized. MLB's Competitive Balance Tax, commonly called the luxury tax, sets a payroll threshold each year that clubs can exceed, but only at a cost, so payroll rank and tax standing are two different questions worth tracking separately.
Why These Numbers Matter for This Roster
The Athletics have run on analytics as an identity since the Moneyball era of the early 2000s, when a small budget under general manager Billy Beane turned advanced metrics into a competitive edge. That same logic applies now: a club rebuilding through the Sacramento years toward Las Vegas has to find value other teams miss, and efficiency indexes, prospect grades, and payroll tracking are how fans can follow that search.
